Response to Extending the Implementation Period (June 2020)

Thank you for your email regarding extending the implementation period and the final transition details about the UK leaving the EU.

The Government’s focus remains on tackling the COVID-19 outbreak. This is an urgent priority, and a series of emergency measures have been implemented to manage the effects of this crisis.
The 2019 Conservative Manifesto committed against extending the implementation period beyond December 2020, a promise that has been guaranteed legally. It is to be expected that the process will remain under constant evaluation but as far as I am aware there has been no change to the plans that were in place before the COVID 19 emergency.
Further discussions will take place between UK and EU representatives in June, and although currently this matter should conclude as legally committed to by the end of 2020, I think it is fair to say that Government, in the light of the state of emergency both in this country and across Europe, will inform us of any change.
Thank you again for contacting me, and I do hope you are able to stay safe at this challenging time.
Yours sincerely,

Dame Cheryl
