After a fantastic early spring Bank Holiday, we are definitely all set to enjoy the many events coming up during a summer of fairs, fetes and fund raisers – even if the weather does manage to do its worst!
One of the most enjoyable events (and I hope I am not jinxing the weather) is the Chesham Carnival, which is great fun because it is a chance for pupils from our schools to be at the centre of this great community gathering. This year the theme is Music and, as well as those on board the colourful floats, pupils from local dance schools will be taking part too.
The team of volunteers work all year to make the Chesham Carnival the success that it is. Parents drawn from the ten schools make up the organising committee, but there are many other local groups and businesses who do their utmost to make the day go with a swing.
This year I would like to pass on a request from the Chiltern Dial-a-ride scheme, because they are going to be providing a vehicle for the parade and I shall be a passenger, like many of the other local people who have called on Dial-a-ride.
Chiltern Dial-a-ride is a registered charity and they provide an affordable, accessible and safe transport service for local people who have mobility problems and cannot drive or use public transport. They provide a door-to-door round trip service, using specially-equipped vehicles which have vehicle access and trained, caring drivers.
The reason for using the Dial-a-ride vehicle in the parade is because many of the smaller vehicles are driven by volunteers and the charity is keen to get more people involved as volunteers. The Dial-a-ride team told me: “You can volunteer as much or as little as you like from 1 day a week to 1 day a month. All training will be provided. We are a friendly team based in Latimer, Chesham.”
I hope some of you may be able to join the team and help local people to get around. Contact Chiltern Dial-a-ride on 01494 766123 or https://chiltern-dial-a-ride.net/contact-us/ and I hope you will enjoy the Carnival!
