Although the recent economic figures showed that there was a slowing in growth in the UK economy, overall the outlook shows improvements. In particular the rate of unemployment is the lowest it has been for 40 years.
There are 32.26 million people in work, which is 427,000 more than a year ago. Since 2010, an average of more than 1,000 people are now in work every day. The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions confirmed in mid-April that the number of women in the workplace is also now at a new record of 71 per cent.
Youth employment has also fallen by more than 40 per cent since 2010, which is excellent news.
What is good news for this constituency is that almost 70 per cent of the overall rise in employment has been in the higher-skilled occupations. That is very positive for Chesham & Amersham where we have residents who have strong skills and with our excellent schools locally the new generation of workers are emerging with good qualifications to offer to employers.
Although there has been a small increase in the number of people out of work in this constituency, the number is about 1 per cent of the economically active people living locally. Chesham & Amersham is 607th in the list of parliamentary constituencies which means that only 43 constituencies nationally have a higher rate of employment. It would still be good to be 650th though!
In the roll-call of innovative companies, hearty congratulations to the team at Trio Healthcare Ltd in Great Missenden, who were awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise during April. The announcement of the award was given as “advanced breathable silicone technology platform to improve patient care and reduce healthcare spending.” That sounds a bit technical, but in essence the company makes silicone adhesive and skincare products for people who have had “ostomies”, so these are products enabling them to live well and to counter any difficulties arising from their ongoing medical needs. Well done!
