Dame Cheryl Gillan visits The Misbourne School

On a visit to The Misbourne school last week, Dame Cheryl met Ms Jo Meloni, the recently appointed Headteacher, to see for herself how the school is progressing under her direction. They discussed the exciting future plans for the school and the improvements that have taken place under Ms Meloni’s leadership.

Dame Cheryl spent nearly two hours at the school, where she spoke with Ms Meloni about a range of subjects including, planning applications, HS2’s impact on the area and school funding.

Dame Cheryl also enjoyed an engaging ‘hot chocolate Friday’ session with students from Year 7 to Year 13. These breaktime meetings were introduced by the Headteacher and involve pupils who have been nominated by one of their teachers during that week to discuss their accomplishments.

The students asked Dame Cheryl, amongst other things, why she became an MP, what her views were on selective education, and what advice she would give to a new generation of aspiring women in the world of work.

Dame Cheryl was impressed with the students and their questions. She said: “I was delighted to meet with Ms Meloni and see for myself the progress the school has made since her appointment. It was also heartening to meet such talented students and discuss their recent achievements and answer such a wide range of interesting questions.”

Ms Meloni said: "We are always delighted to have invited guests come and meet our students and having Dame Cheryl Gillan was no exception. We have a strong focus on democracy and careers education and her visit provided our students a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into Dame Gillan's work and career. She engaged superbly well with our students, handling their questions with ease and challenging their thinking. I personally enjoyed our meeting exploring a number of current school priorities and very much look forward to welcoming Cheryl back sometime soon".
