Thank you for contacting me about Tony Abbott’s appointment to the Board of Trade, I do take on board your comments and concerns about this appointment and the role of advisers in Number 10.
The Board of Trade was re-established in 2017 in order to champion British exports as well as investment emanating from and entering the UK. The Board is also tasked with ensuring that the benefits of global trade are felt across the whole of our United Kingdom.
Regarding the question of whether an Australian citizen could take on a significant role at the Board of Trade, I believe it is important to note that the nationalities of members of the Board and its advisers do not determine how effectively they can promote UK economic interests around the world.
I know that public appointments are subject to a great deal of scrutiny and the appointment of Tony Abbott has been based on selecting advisers who can provide expertise to help promote and secure the UK’s global trading interests.
However, I have written to The Trade Secretary and when I receive a response, I will place it on my website.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me and for sharing your views.
